On the auspicious occasion of Navratri, visit Maa Jwala Devi on the first day and in this series of strange but true facts, know the secret of the divine light of the Goddess, which no one could know till date. Jwala Devi is one of the Shaktipeeths of Maa Bhagwati. Located in Himachal Pradesh. The temple of Maa Jota Wali is also known as Nagarkot. The biggest miracle of this temple is that it is not an idol but nine flames emanating from the womb of the earth are worshipped.
Natural flames have been burning in the Jwala Devi temple for centuries. A total of 9 flames in number, symbolize the 9 forms of Maa Durga. Geologists have been working for the last several years to know their secret, but even after digging 9 km, till date they have not found the place from where natural gas comes out.
First of all this temple was built by Raja Bhumi Chand. Here the temple has been built on these flames coming out of the womb of the earth. These 9 lights are worshiped in the names of Mahakali, Annapurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Vindhyavasini, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika, Anjidevi. Later in 1835, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Raja Sansar Chand got this temple renovated.
During the British rule, the British tried a lot to know the secret of Jwala Devi Temple's flame and to use the energy buried under the ground, but even after lakhs of efforts, they did not get anything. After independence, geologists also made efforts in this direction, but the flames coming out of the temple remained a mystery.
According to a religious story related to Jwala Devi, devotee Gorakhnath used to worship the mother in Jwala Devi. He was engrossed in his mother's attention all the time. Once hungry, Gorakhnath said to his mother, 'Mother, keep the water warm till then I will bring alms.' When Gorakhnath went to collect alms, time changed and Kalyug came. Gorakhnath could not return. It is believed that this is the same flame which was lit by the mother. Steam seems to rise from the water of the pool built at some distance from Jwala Devi. This kund is also known as the box of Gorakhnath. It is believed that this flame will continue to burn till the arrival of Satyug and the return of Gorakhnath.
1. Jwaladevi Temple out of 51 Shaktipeeths:
The place where Mata Sati's tongue fell in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India, is called Jwalaji Sthan. It is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Mata Sati. Its power is Siddhida (Ambika) and Bhairav is called Unmatta.
2. Worship of Jwala form:
In this temple, not the idol form of the mother but the flame form is worshipped, which has been burning for thousands of years. The flame lit here is considered miraculous. From this place, since the beginning of time, 9 flames are coming out from inside the earth. These flames are the form of 9 goddesses – Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Annapurna, Chandi, Vindhyavasini, Hinglaj Bhavani, Ambika and Anjana Devi.
3. Akbar had cut the neck of Dhyanu's horse:
For thousands of years, 9 flames are burning from the mouth of the goddess located here. It is a legend that Dhyanu, a devotee of Mata, used to travel here every year with a group. Once Akbar stopped him from going there and cut off the head of Dhyanu's horse and said that if your mother is truthful, he will add its head.
4. Mother made the horse alive:
In such a situation, Dhyanu said to Akbar that I request you to keep the horse's neck and torso safe for a month. Akbar agreed to Dhyanu's advice. Taking permission from the king, Dhyanu went to the court of his mother. After bathing, worshiping etc., stayed awake all night. In the morning Dhyanu prayed to the mother with folded hands and said, O mother! Now my shame is in your hands. It is said that keeping the honor of her devotee, the mother brought the horse back to life.
5. Akbar tried to extinguish the flame:
Akbar was surprised to see the horse alive. Then he called his army and himself went towards the temple. Akbar tried to harm the place to test the mother or with any other intention. First of all, he got water poured in the whole temple with his army, but the flame of the mother did not go out. It is said that then he dug a canal and diverted the water towards the flame, even then the flame did not go out.
6. Mother did not accept the golden umbrella:
Even after several attempts, when the flame did not go out, Akbar was convinced that some or the other power resided here. Then he offered a golden umbrella there but the mother did not accept it and that umbrella fell down and turned into some other substance. Even today you can see that chhatra offered by Akbar in Jwala Mandir.
7. Indra's wife Shachi did penance for her mother:
According to Skandpuran, in Satyuga, Shachi, the daughter of demon King Pulom, had done penance to Goddess Parvati, the presiding deity of the Himalayas in Jwaladham, to get Devraj Indra as her husband. Mother Parvati was pleased with Shachi's penance and appeared to her in the form of Deept Jwaleshwari and fulfilled Shachi's wish.
8. This temple was built in Satyuga:
It is said that King Bhumichand, the supreme devotee of Mahakali in Satyuga, got a grand temple built here inspired by his dream. Later this place was discovered by the Pandavas. After this, here Guru Gorakhnath had received boons and blessings from the mother by performing severe penance. In 1835, this temple was rebuilt by Raja Ranjit Singh and Raja Sansar Chand. Whoever comes to visit this mysterious temple with a true heart, all his wishes are fulfilled.
